<image:caption>I loved kits that had chromed parts. If you didn’t scape the chrome off the side to be glued, the bits would just fall apart. That happened on my first go with this kit. The second kit turned out better but on this attempt I over-glued the front end making the propeller’s spinner useless. The third go of this kit was a success and turned out to be one of the best model builds I had ever done.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>Well, it’s pretty obvious that this creature was created in the dark hormonal driven puberty junkyard of a 13 year old boy. Most of my Super 8 movies where just 2minute tests to see how lighting works or to study how choppy my animation was.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>Living in Seattle and around Puget Sound, sooner or later, I would have to make a film that had Killer whale animation. I made a table top set that included chunks of carved paraffin wax that represented ice shelfs and bergs. The ocean was all clay with a hole in the table that my whale could breach. This animation took me days to do with the whale rising out of the water and the clay ripples and waves interacting with the puppet. Of course I do not have the footage. The film was lost due to a leaky basement wall that flooded my film closet. The one that got away.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the Super 8 editor that I used to watch and study animation. In front of the editor is a Bolex block film splicer. That’s how I use to piece my movies together. There is also a little glass bottle of glue that would cement the film together. From plastic model making to editing Super 8 film, my room always smelled of glue.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>This was a fun animation I did when I was 16 years old. I was always thinking about world destruction and atomic bombs and the stupidity of world leaders. This scenario was set in some future time when the American people would elect a President that styled a mohawk for his hair choice. Everything was clay except for the drapes. As the President delivers a speech of safety and well being, the Capitol building blows up in the background and disappears into a mushroom cloud. I received some high marks in my social studies class for this film.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Entering MADGOD. Tippett’s world was comforting and safe. Once again I was in the right place when Phil was looking for animators to help on his project. The work was always on the weekends and it lasted all day. With the help of other Mad Godders, we would build what ever Phil came up with. There was no plan laid out for us. The only person who had the road map was Phil and that was kept deep inside the depths. He would say, “Build a steam-roller that the shitmen can drive”. That is a phrase you just don’t hear on a normal lazy Saturday. That was a pleasure to be able to create with a builder’s dream of a work shop. Tippett Studio had every tool you could ever need. Not to mention the amazing equipment room full of cameras, lights, grip and stage gear. It was an organized warehouse of chaos that Phil could navigated without headlights. It was a pure pleasure to be a part of this time period, a period that I don’t think will ever be re-created. For me at least that time was once in a life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>StarWars</image:title>
<image:caption>I have always been a Fanboy of the original Star Wars 1977. The dream to someday work on a Star Wars film was never as great once I saw Empire Strikes Back. When the stop motion sequences would play, I wished I could have been a part of their making. I was way too young and by the time I finally started animating as a profession, The Star Wars films were a thing of the past. Then Variety magazine put out a small teaser article that mentioned George Lucas was working on the continuation of the Star Wars saga. The timing was perfect and when I wrapped up on the movie James and the Giant Peach, I was hired on at Industrial Light and Magic. A place I had always wanted to work. I was on the newest Star Wars feature, The Phantom Menace and I was living a dream I never thought would be possible. I was animating and going to dallies to watch the rushes and George Lucas was right in the theater with the crew. Then the movie was released in 1999 and it wasn’t a party like Prince was always singing about. The movie was a flat out disappointment and it sucked as hard as I ever saw a movie suck. I was being blamed for destroying everyone’s childhood memories of a galaxy far far away. The crew leaving the theater that day were dazed and wondered into the street. Groups formed trying to comfort one another by saying, “It was great,? Right?” Star Wars the Phantom Menace broke me and the only way out was to never go back to ILM. I just decided that I was done working there. The following week I stayed in bed and a revelation formed in my head. I was through with the film industry. I would never animate again. I would live in San Francisco and hopefully get a job at Vesuvio’s pub washing pint glasses in a back room. So, I quit ILM. I spent that morning waiting for the phone ring. Waiting for ILM to call, to have someone one on the other end say, “Are you alright?” ”Are you coming into work today?”. I practiced what I was going to say and it all sounded very unprofessional and closer to what someone might say when they are having a mental breakdown. I was having a mental breakdown. It’s been 22 years and I can finally bring myself to lay this out. I just never went back into work. I told the person on the other end of the phone that I would not be coming into work that day or any other day. The HR department at Industrial Light and Magic said that it would look very bad on my record to just leave without an exit interview. It looked bad to flat out quit without warning or telling the supervisors. I said that I understood that and whatever the HR department wanted to put in my workers file was fine with me. They said I would have trouble securing another animation gig especially in San Francisco. You shouldn’t just walk out on ILM. It will look very bad. The VFX industry is a small community in San Francisco and word would get around. Again I said I understood. I thanked them and hung up. That weekend I drove out past Golden Gate Park to Ocean Beach and made a bon fire. A few friends showed up and, once the sun had begun to set, an inflatable blow-up doll of Jar Jar Binks was tossed onto the fire. The joy that flaming symbol of failure gave me was one of freedom and panic for my next job. But, standing in the ocean breeze, I knew everything would work out. Then the smell of the burning plastic polluted the air. It was horrendous and I’m sure quite harmful but not as horrendous as the foul stench that The Phantom Menace had already released unto the world. Never work in this town again. So cliché. Phil Tippett hired me and I think part of the reason he hired me was because he liked that story so much. That was in 1999 and since that time I have been back to work for ILM on a few more projects. In 2010 I joined the animators on the film Rango. In 2018 I returned again to ILM, this time in London to work on Jurassic World the Fallen Kingdom. However, it was at Tippett Studio where some major healing took place by animating stop-motion for The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker. No harm was done from that impulsive decision to quit my job after the premier of Star Wars The Phantom Menace. It just changed the direction and created new opportunities which eventually brought a chance meeting with my future wife working on a new animated show for kids. The animated show was called: The Phantom Investigators.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is ASH, the son of Mr. Fox. There is something about the proportions of this puppet that made animating it a treat. When a puppet fits in the animators hand there is a control that can be lost with the larger scale puppets. Atari, the boy puppet from Isle of Dogs had the same proportions that Ash had. Atari was another great puppet to animate.</image:caption>

      <image:title>FantasticMrFox - This is ASH</image:title>
<image:caption>This is ASH, the son of Mr. Fox. There is something about the proportions of this puppet that made animating it a treat. When a puppet fits in the animators hand there is a control that can be lost with the larger scale puppets. Atari, the boy puppet from Isle of Dogs had the same proportions that Ash had. Atari was another great puppet to animate.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This must be late 1979. I had just seen Alien and was in pre-production on animating my version of that awesome film. This sculpt was all in clay. The ship had a wooden armature that I built from 2x4’s. It was mounted on a pretty hefty tripod with a crank head so that I could animate it lowering onto the planet surface. At the top of frame you can see the landing gear that would be animated out from the belly of the ship. Everything was clay!!!! Very heavy!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>I finally found a path to head down. My plan was to make as many clay sculptures that a could during a summer break. Then I would put together a portfolio that I would send down to Will Vinton and he in turn would give me a job. At least that was what had to happen,….I didn’t have a back-up plan.</image:caption>

I’ll help you design a plan and schedule that suits your situation. What would you like to work on? Private Animation Instruction? Personal Film Project that needs a push? Maybe you would like to learn and improve your clay animation. We could even work on CG character animation. Let me help you through the hard bits or just answer the questions that you have about surviving the animation industry.</image:title>

      <image:title>Frankenweenie</image:title>
<image:caption>By the end of Frankenweenie there were crushed spirits and damaged friendships. It took a toll on most folks especially those who worked right up to the end of the show. We weren’t even in the main studio’s anymore at the end of the production. 3Mills had other contracts for those studio spaces so Frankenweenie was forced out. The production simply went too far over schedule. The animation continued on the back lot behind the main buildings. We were tucked away in the back storage sheds where corrosive janitorial supplies were stored. In a way it made for the perfect setting for the tainted paranoid atmosphere that hung over us as animators.</image:caption>
